Ah...I'd forgotten about that cancelled appointment, though it intrigued me at the time, now that you mention it.
I didn't mean to cast aspersions on government employees -- just the job Jim is doing sounds mind-numbingly boring and he's clearly extremely bright - so he's chosen to do a job where he doesn't have to think, he has zero responsibilities, it seems, can get away with murder (or at least doing buggerall during the day), probably leaves at 5pm on the button every day and never has to 'take his work home with him', because he doesn't have that level of responsibility.
Neither of them appear to have any friends or social life, which also intrigues me - they're both loners.
